HAPPY EARTH DAY!
happy earth day indeed. 🙂 HAPPY EARTH day. i like to think that the earth is getting happier and happier all the time. the first earth day took place back on april 22nd in the year 1970, when a us senator became appalled at the devastation caused by a 1969 santa barbara, california oil spill. his name was gaylord nelson (unfortunate name i have to say- i had a beavis moment there) and he labeled it a “national teach-in on the environment”. that day 20 millions americans took the the streets in support of “earth day”. since then, there have been 42 earth days in the years to pass. In 1990 the even went global thanks to organizer denis hayes. 200 million people from 141 different countries brought environmental awareness to the world’s attention. in 1995 nelson was given the presidential medal of freedom for his involvement. in 2000 the campaign was organized once again by hayes, this time with 5,000 environmental groups and 184 countries backing the event reaching 100’s of millions of people across the planet, with the focus on clean energy. in 2010 the event turned 40, and the focus turned to commitment. they started pledges for planting trees and committing to acts of “green”.
i would venture to say that earth day is responsible for society today and it’s level of awareness. my generation cares so much about what they eat and do. we have become acutely aware of our surroundings and how we can and do effect them. we also are aware of the effects our environment can have on us as humans, and the other animal species around the globe. we know the effect of these species on each other, as well as on society. we know so very very much. sure, there are those out there who are looting and polluting earth, but we know that this is not right. we know and we express that knowledge that these people are damaging our world and our lives. that is the first step to recovering what we have lost, and it is well underway.
